Prabal Gurung is a fashion designer who got his start in New Delhi.  He moved to New York to pursue his fashion career and worked under designers such as Bill Blass.  He launched his own line in 2009 and has been a huge success ever since.  If you’re like me, you probably weren’t too familiar with Prabal Gurung because his line is SO expensive.  I could never walk in to a high-end store and drop $1,000 on a Prabal Gurung shirt.

Here’s where Target comes in.  As I’m sure you’ve probably heard, Prabal Gurung and Target have combined forces to come up with a BEAUTIFUL line of apparel and accessories that real people can afford.  I went to Target  this week to see the line for myself and check out the prices.  Here are the pieces from the clothing line that I really like:

So, what do you think?  Was the Target/Neiman Marcus collection an epic fail?  If you’ve read any of the current articles, that seems to be the overwhelming opinion.  I have to be honest, I’m really disappointed in all the criticism.

Yes, the majority of the collection was out of touch with what shoppers want BUT I still believe in the idea behind the collaboration.  I think that designers should be available to everyone.  Unfortunately, we live in a society that still believes it’s fun that only a small percentage of people can afford big name designers.  One blogger posted that the fun about Neiman Marcus is that it’s not obtainable to the average person.  Do we really still believe that garbage?  Owning designer items should be about creating a style that’s unique to you.  It should NOT be about flaunting or bragging that you’re wearing designer items just because they cost a lot of money.  To quote Yves Saint-Laurent, ““Over the years, I have learned that what is important in a dress is the woman who is wearing it.”

I was disappointed that the two Tory Burch items in the collection were a lunch box and thermos instead of a pair of shoes and a purse.  However, there are a lot of people taking really cute Tory Burch lunch boxes to work right now that might never own another Tory Burch item in their life.  And even if most consider this an epic fail, I consider it a success that Target tried to make the unobtainable obtainable to people like you and me.  In this new year, I feel it’s all about shopping smart and finding deals instead of throwing your money away paying retail prices.  I can’t wait to see Target’s next collaboration with Prabal Gurung in February.

The Neiman Marcus collection is currently 70% off!  You can shop online here.

Fabulous Friday!

First, let me take a quick moment to wish Christy and Misty a very happy birthday today!  May your birthday be as fabulous as both of you!

Let’s talk about Target’s partnership with Neiman Marcus.  Remember my post a while back when I said I wanted Tory Burch and Target to partner up?  Well, I kind of got my wish!  Target is carrying 60 items in partnership with Neiman Marcus and a couple are Tory Burch items!  Not exactly what I was looking for but it’s a great start!

The items were released on December 1st and can be found in store and online.  I’ve seen most of the items in person and they are fabulous.  If you go to the store, they’ll have a special section with all the Neiman Marcus items in one place.  Here are my favorite picks from the items.  Which is your fave?
